Celebrating Martin Luther King
Jr. Day at OIT.
Currently a senior at OIT in the Applied Psychology
program, Rebecca Barden is involved in many diverse
activities.  Along with being a mother of 4 and grandmother
of 2, she perseveres in all aspects of life and is set on
making an impact in not only the OIT community, but the
Klamath community as well. She quotes, “My life goal is to
be qualified to help women have hope for the future and a
safer environment”, so it is not a surprise that she has put
forth so much effort in the development of the Women’s
Resource Center (WRC) and creation of the Women’s Club.
As the Coordinator of the WRC, Rebecca constantly strives to serve the unique
needs of Oregon Tech’s diverse community of men and women. She is a certified
sexual assault advocate and has helped in the training of Resident Advisors on
sexual assault in the Residence Hall, did classroom presentations on Sexual
Assault Prevention on campus all last year, along with spearheading the first
Sexual Assault Awareness Week at OIT in April 2006 as well as last year.
Among her many OIT goals, one of them is to help bring back a child care
program to OIT. She is also organizing the first Women’s Conference at OIT,
which will take place April 3-5, and supervises and trains 11 WRC Student
Volunteers. Rebecca has been actively involved in several OIT campus
committees, and also works as a writing tutor in CFLAT.
Between her work and responsibilities, she occasionally finds time to pursue her
interests, which include spending time with family, working with wood, stitching
and gardening. Rebecca’s family, who all live in Oregon, always come first for
her. Her oldest son graduated from OIT in 2000 and works for GE Transportation
, her daughter will graduate in June from University of Oregon, one son is an
Oregon State Trooper and another works for a computer technology firm in
Eugene.
Rebecca’s long-term goal is to achieve a Masters degree in Counseling,
emphasis in women and adolescent females who have experienced trauma and
is currently completing the graduate school application process. She is very
compassionate towards all the men and women who are acquainted with her. Her
values incorporate working with women and empowering them to become all they
aspire to be. In all, Rebecca Barden represents the perfect meaning of
versatility.
